## Original Post: Sept 30. 1.16am. A Palm Harbor, Florida, mother is facing felony child abuse charges after her 5-month-old baby boy suffering a traumatic brain injury after the woman becoming angry with the infant’s father.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Burgandie Marquez, 30, told detectives she became enraged during a phone call with the baby’s father on Thursday, and intentionally and forcefully jerked the child up from the ground twice, causing the infant’s head to snap backward and suffer a severe brain bleed.
Marquez said she then placed her baby underneath her arm and ran up and down the stairs inside her Palm Harbor home, allowing the infant’s head to bounce up and down without support.
Detectives said she admitted that she knew she had been too ‘rough’ with the baby.
But it gets worse.
Marquez gives contradictory information during police interviews:
The next morning, Marquez noticed the 5-month-old was having seizures. Instead of taking the child to hospital, the mother said she instead tried consoling the baby instead.
That afternoon, Marquez decided to take the infant to Pasco County to meet the child’s father, but stopped at a gas station when the baby’s condition worsened and said she needed medical attention for his seizures.
Paramedics airlifted the baby to St. Joseph’s Hospital for life-threatening injuries. Medical staff at the hospital told detectives the child suffered a severe brain bleed caused by head trauma. He remains in critical condition.
WFLA reports Marquez and the child had been staying at a residence in Palm Harbor. Witnesses told detectives that the child appeared in good health on Wednesday.
Detectives say Marquez was the sole caretaker of the 5-month-old from Monday until the medical issue was reported on Friday.
Detectives interviewed Marquez on Saturday and found out that she gave contradictory statements about how the child was injured and was arrested.
She is now facing one count of aggravated child abuse with great bodily injury. The mother currently remains at Pinellas County Jail pending $50,000 bail.
Of note, the Tampa Bay Times cited jail records indicating Marquez being wanted for two Pasco County counts of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance. Bail was placed at $25K for those counts.
