What led to Markiya Mitchell a Rochester, NY mother drowning her ten day old baby son? Mother embroiled in a child custody dispute with baby’s father. 

Markiya Mitchell a 25 year old Rochester, NY woman has been charged with second degree murder after drowning her ten day old son in a bathtub at the family residence. 

Rochester police told of responding Monday afternoon to a report of an unresponsive child at a home where they found a baby in a bathtub.

Officials say the child, named Jeremiah, was taken to Rochester General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

During questioning, cops said Mitchell admitted to intentionally drowning her baby reported the Democrat and Chronicle

The outlet cited court documents which told of Mitchell placing her 10-day-old son in 8 to 10 inches of water in a bathtub inside her apartment at 31 Locust St. The woman’s child was submerged in bath water for one to two hours.

Markiya Mitchell Rochester mother previously used a hammer on seven year old son:

Upon her arrest, the Rochester mom was arraigned on the murder charge Tuesday morning in Rochester City Court. Mitchell pleaded not guilty and was ordered held in jail without bail. The name of the public defender assigned to her case wasn’t available.

Police did not identify the adult who found Jeremiah in the tub, only to say, ‘that person has been fully cooperative with the investigation,‘ according to major crimes. Nevertheless it is now thought that individual is the child’s father who Mitchell had been fighting with.

Police say Mitchell also has a 7-year-old child, currently in the care of a relative.

Of note, WHEC told of Mitchell having a criminal record, with police declining to outline the woman’s criminal history. Authorities also declined discussing Mitchell’s mental state.

Monroe County spokesman Jesse Sleezer said he could not confirm or deny whether a Child Protective Services case was linked to Mitchell and her children.

Solina Lewis reporting for Rochester 8 told of court records showing that Markiya Mitchell and the baby’s father having a custody dispute, with several orders of protection were issued against Mitchell.

Lewis also relayed police source saying that Mitchell had history of child abuse. Allegedly the woman beat her 7 year old child with hammer, only to recently have gotten her child back from CPS, before relinquishing the child.

Mitchell is scheduled to return to City Court Friday morning for a preliminary hearing, with additional charges pending.
