Fashion purists will often debate about the likes of ‘Unique’, a collection created by high street giant TopShop, being on the international catwalk circuit. Whatever next! Will the likes of Primark, New Look and good old Marks & Spencer be joining in! Surely a line between designer and high street has to be drawn? Either way the debate is not clear cut; yes TopShop is a high street chain that mass produces at affordable prices, however it has also been fundamental in new talent support schemes and regularly collaborates with a roster of key LFW designers. After all great British style is down to its eclectic merge of high street trends and designer pieces – right?

Opinions shifted to one side and the TopShop Unique show was full to bursting. Models donned gold leaf caps and it rapidly became apparent that the theme centred on Ancient Egypt courtesy of Cleopatra prints, gold straps, embellishments, snakes and hieroglyphs. Even ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ by The Bangles (ask your Mother) blurted out from the speakers. Egyptian styling references aside most of the core shapes referenced the 90’s with hoodies, track pants, baggy tops, and body stockings. Not forgetting the 90’s icon – the bum bag AKA fanny packs! Say what you will about this little 90s accessory but they are bloody useful – as any international traveller will testify!
