Victor de Souza: Oceanic Imperial

At first the looks used high shoulders to frame the face in a way that evoked adjectives like “dynastic” or “imperial,” until naturally there was a subtle change of course. When attached to cropped jackets – or nothing at all – the same shoulder silhouette suddenly seemed more influenced by the Spanish bolero than the Mandarin jacket.

While de Souza used strong shoulders and asymmetrical cuts to show strength, he undercut the message with delicate, flowing fabrics elsewhere. This is where his stated inspiration – the ocean – is most apparent. His dresses moved like they were under water, and it’s easy to visualize a future photo shoot where a submerged model in de Souza brandishes a gilded trident as she explores the depths.
