Minneapolis zombies win lawsuit.
The recession isn’t just affecting human kind; the undead are feeling its repercussions too. So when seven zombies had a chance to sue the city of Minneapolis, they leapt (can zombies leap?) at the opportunity and came out with a handsome $165,000 pay off.
Minneapolis Star Tribune: The payout, approved by the City Council on Friday, settles a federal lawsuit the seven filed after they were arrested and jailed for two days for dressing up like zombies in downtown Minneapolis on July 22, 2006, to protest “mindless” consumerism.
The undead actors went all out; wearing thick white powder and fake blood, and created dark circles around their eyes. Armed with music that simulated weapons of mass destruction, and meandering back and forth in traditional zombie form, for their cause.
The zombies were arrested, but never charged with a crime. The zombies went to court to prove that the Minneapolis police lacked probably cause to arrest the seven; the trial, which would have taken place this fall, was settled by the city and the undead.
“I feel great that the city is being held accountable for the actions of their police,” said Raphi Rechitsky, 27, of Minneapolis, one of the seven zombies, who said he and his friends were performing street theater when they were arrested. He is a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at the University of Minnesota.
Of course Raphi feels great about the settlement; he banked a couple thousand bucks for dressing up like a zombie; and fighting, ironically, mindless consumerism. We hope Raphi does something meaningful with his settlement money; we’d hate to see a zombie not practice what they preach.
Zombies: 165,000k Minneapolis Police: 0….. our country is now outsmarted by even the undead. Hmm.
