A Minneapolis, Minnesota man is alleged to have gone on a mass shooting spree, killing two and injuring six, including two police officers amid eviction proceedings.
Carlton Neal Johnson II, 35, the suspect gunman at the time of the shootings, Wednesday was in the process of being evicted from his 9th floor residence at the Shoreline Plaza for allegedly making ‘violent threats’ in the building he lived in.
According to court documents cited by KARE11, Carlton Johnson II was ordered to vacate his residence from the Loring Towers on East Grand Street in the Loring Park area in June.
Pattern of repeat violent behavior
Court documents allege a pattern of behavior from Johnson, ranging from engaging in loud arguments with others, walking around the premises with a firearm openly displayed, and making statements to neighbors that he would kill someone.
His eviction trial was supposed to take place in August but had been rescheduled to September 11, the outlet reported.
Sgt. Garrett Parten with the Minneapolis Police Department said officers were called to the high-rise apartment building Wednesday at 4:36 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found multiple victims amid gunfire. Officers followed the sound of gunfire to an upper floor of the building, Parten said, where they reported a haze that ‘significantly limited their visibility.’
Court documents stated what began as a domestic incident between Johnson and one of the shooting victims devolved into the suspect targeting other individuals in the building.
Sgt. Parten told press that the shooter was deceased, but did not say how he died.

Minneapolis tenant openly carried gun throughout building along with making threats
Officers went unit by unit evacuating residents and searching for any other victims.
Four people were found suffering from gunshot wounds; one person died at the apartment building and another died at the hospital, MPD said. Two officers and two more civilians were also shot and injured and were brought to the hospital.
In total, seven patients were rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, one of whom was later pronounced dead, spokesman Jonathan Comito said.
A motive for the shooting remained unclear, though Minneapolis police said they were ‘familiar’ with the suspect.
His erratic behavior apparently started back in January, when property managers claim he disturbed the peace by getting into a loud argument and repeatedly knocked on a neighbor’s door.
Then on March 23, Johnson assaulted a resident on the premises of the affordable housing complex and by June he started openly carrying a gun.
The final straw apparently came on June 11, when Johnson was seen walking around the complex with his firearm and entered the management office, where he allegedly waved the gun in front of multiple management personnel according to a criminal complaint.
That same day, Johnson allegedly told other residents that he obtained a new gun and ‘would kill someone.’
Two days later, Johnson was also seen flashing his gun to others on the sidewalk.
Eviction order issued and ominous Facebook posts
After receiving the eviction order, Johnson told property managers he would comply with the lease agreement moving forward, and the landlord allowed him to stay so long as he agreed to no longer display his gun or any other weapon.
The alleged gunman who appeared to be brimming with rage, had increasingly being posting ominous posts on social media in the weeks prior.
Shared the gunman on his Facebook page on April 13, ‘Once you realize your worth, you’ll be embarrassed at the stuff you once settled for.’
Posted Johnson on his Facebook page on April 28, ‘People with the biggest hearts don’t attract better people… they attract people who take advantage of them.’
Posted Johnson on May 26, ‘Mistreating people & then avoiding communication with them is not protecting your peace;you’re avoiding accountability. You need to have communication instead of ego.’
Baby momma and custody battle
Shoreline Plaza resident Chris Miller told the Minneapolis Star Tribune the suspect told him earlier in the week how he planned to shoot his ex-girlfriend and two building property managers.
He further claimed he emailed building management, warning them of Johnson’s remarks just days before the tragedy.
Miller also noted that the gunman lived alone and had at least a couple of kids who did not live with him, but was mad about a recent breakup.
Another resident speaking to the Tribune said he would regularly see Johnson outside drinking.
He said the suspect was involved in a child custody dispute, and his car was recently repossessed.
Moments before the shooting, another resident claims, Johnson said he was going to kill the mother of his child.
A female resident who encountered Johnson moments before gunfire told her, “I’m going to kill my baby mama and you’re going to witness it,”
‘Next thing you know, I come back, we can’t get in the building. He did it,’ the resident told Fox 6.
Authorities have yet to release the identity of the victims, including the ‘baby mama’ Johnson had set out to kill.
The low-income apartment complex was purchased for $30 million in 2021 by a real estate partnership controlled by Related Companies of New York, according to Hennepin County property records.
