Melanie Elkins, 13 year old Ohio girl found dead in Akron alley. Deceased child had been reported missing the day before by her family. Autopsy results pending.

Ohio authorities are investigating the death of a 13 year old girl who was found deceased on Monday in an Akron alley.

The girl’s lifeless body was found behind a home just before 1pm on Monday, WOIO reported. A distraught woman called 911 to say she had come across a ‘very young’ girl.

The girl was identified as 13 year old child, Melanie Elkins according to the The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Akron police said she had been reported as a runaway on Sunday, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.

Investigators said that Elkins showed no apparent signs of trauma. An autopsy has been completed and results are pending while toxicology testing is performed. A final determination could take at least two weeks, the medical examiner’s office said.

Cause of death yet to be determined

It remained unclear how long Elkins had been deceased and how the girl had come to arrive at the alley.

Elkins had been a seventh grader at East Middle School and was enrolled for eighth grade there.

A GoFundMe page has been established by Kim Kashuba to assist with the funeral and memorial expenses for Melanie Elkins. Kim describes Melanie as a vibrant soul full of potential, whose life should have been just beginning. The family is requesting donations to create an appropriate monument in honor of their beloved Melanie.

Read the fundraiser in part, ‘I remember her when she was a tiny little kid talking a mile a minute, smart beyond her years. So much kindness and sweetness all in one.’
