Jazzlyn Cooper-Holmes, Longview, Texas woman arrested after dumping newborn baby under bucket in backyard of trailer home.
A 23-year-old East Texas woman is in custody after allegedly giving birth on a toilet, placing her newborn baby in a mop bucket outside, and falling asleep. The infant was found deceased outside a trailer where the suspect lived.
Jazzlyn Nukenya Cooper-Holmes of Longview was arrested on Wednesday, March 15, after Smith County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a deceased newborn on the 18000 block of US Highway 69 North. The mother was arrested where they found the deceased infant wrapped in a towel next to a mop bucket according to an arrest warrant affidavit cited by KYTX-TV.
It remained unclear if the newborn was alive at the time of birth.
The suspect told investigators she gave birth three days earlier on March 12 inside her trailer home in Lindale, Texas. standing over a toilet ‘so that the baby would go into the toilet.’
The infant reportedly went into the toilet head-first, with the Cooper-Holmes saying she only glanced at it once before wrapping the newborbn in a towel and placing it into a mop bucket. Cooper-Holmes allegedly went outside and put the baby on the ground.
‘I was pregnant. … That can’t happen again. I can’t be pregnant.’
Afterward, Cooper-Holmes reportedly cleaned up the bathroom, and going outside to check on the infant before going back to her room to sleep. After falling asleep, she never returned outside to check on her newborn, KPVI-TV reported.
Authorities responded to the location on Wednesday after Holmes’ roommate, the homeowner, called concerning the infant. They found the infant in the bucket, wrapped in the towel as Holmes had left it three days earlier.
Cooper-Holmes according to the arrest affidavit was reportedly prepared for giving birth. She had ordered some bedsheets, feminine hygiene items, and some medication.
The affidavit further stated Cooper-Holmes allegedly telling the suspected father via Snapchat, ‘I was pregnant. … That can’t happen again. I can’t be pregnant.’
The baby’s body was sent for an autopsy to determine cause of death.
Cooper-Holmes was arrested and booked into the Smith County Jail for abuse of a corpse without legal authority. The mother remains held on $1 million bond. It remained unclear if further charges were pending.
