Was the crash an accident? Pennsylvania father, Derek Marshall & his one year old son are killed after crashing into the Susquehanna river- with the child’s mom surviving.
A father and his one-year-old son have died after their car crashed into a Pennsylvania river over the weekend- in what police now wonder may have been an attempt to purposefully run the vehicle into the water.
The bodies of Derek Marshall, 29, and his one-year-old son Maddox were recovered from the Susquehanna River at about 3.15pm on Saturday.
Surviving the crash was Marshall’s girlfriend, Emily Hoey, 31 of Athens and the mother of Maddox- who was able to escape and make it to shore. She was treated at a hospital.
Police in Bradford County say an Athens Township officer saw a vehicle traveling at high speed Friday night when it went lost control just on 10pm and went into the river.
It’s also unclear how fast Marshall was traveling at the time of the crash and who exactly was driving the vehicle.
Questions now surround whether the crash was accidental or by design?
Derek Marshall Pennsylvania dad crashes car in notorious stretch:
Following reports of the crash, water rescue crews from the surrounding area were called and helped search on Friday night and again Saturday morning.
Marshall and Maddox were discovered Saturday afternoon.
Allie Campbell of Ulster, who works at the Ulster Recycling Center where some of the rescue boats accessed the river, told WNEP she saw search vessels ‘all over the Susquehanna River’.
‘The current is very strong,’ she said. ‘It is very hard, it is very sad. … Everybody knows everybody in a small community.’
Residents also said that the road was known to be difficult terrain to navigate with many choosing to avoid the road.
Not immediately clear is why the driver may have sought to run the vehicle into the river and the nature of the coupe’s relationship prior to Friday night’s incident.
