At what cost fame? Jon James McMurray aka Canadian rapper Jon James killed in skydiving airplane rapping stunt while filming for new upcoming music video. Parachuting incident gone wrong.

How much is fame worth? At what cost? These are some of the things family, friends and fans might be asking themselves following the death of Canadian rapper, Jon James who fell to his death while attempting to perform a stunt for an upcoming music video.

The video which was suppose to be a smash hit- involved the ‘white rapper’ rapping on the wing of an airplane while it was in the air. Hardly for the faint of heart- which in and of itself might have made it all that more appealing for (full name) Jon James McMurray.

‘He knew the risks,’ explained professional skier, Rory Wayne Bushfield, one of McMurray’s longtime friends.

‘Life is short, we all know that,’ Bushfield told the National Post. ‘It’s one of those things. We’re not really sure what happened.’

Jon James McMurray: At what price fame? Pushing the limits?

McMurray, 34, had been performing the stunt on a small, single-engine Cessna over British Columbia on Saturday when things wrong, his management team said.

‘As Jon got further out onto the wing of the plane, it caused the small Cessna to go into a downward spiral that the pilot couldn’t correct,’ his team said in a statement. ‘Jon held onto the wing until it was too late, and by the time he let go, he didn’t have time to pull his chute. He impacted and died instantly.’

According to friends, the rapper had trained ‘intensively’ for the stunt.

‘He planned for everything,’ Bushfield said. ‘It should have been straightforward.’

McMurray, a Calgary native and former pro skier, had crossed over into the music world after breaking his back and shattering his ankle.

‘His passion for making music videos and performing stunts were combined, and Jon pushed music in a new direction that was uncharted territory,’ McMurray’s team said.

‘It was a tragedy when he broke his back,’ Bushfield added. ‘But he took that as a positive and it drove him to do some incredible things.’

McMurray was known for his wild music video antics, and was also an avid skydiver. He released a song with fellow rapper Riff Raff — titled ‘The Man’ — earlier this month, along with a short video which showed him jumping out of a plane.

‘He’s inspired us so much,’ Bushfield told the Post. ‘And will forever.’
