How Kevin Smith daughter Harley Quinn Smith found herself being trolled on social media and the thoughtful responses that it elicited.
Making the media rounds is the controversy surrounding indie film-maker Kevin Smith’s daughter, Haley Quinn Smith being trolled on social media after posting a photo of herself.
Causing particular discontent was a photo Haley Quinn Smith posted on instagram of her attending a ret carpet event over the weekend.
Wrote the 17 year old teen: ‘a pic that could not possibly be more up close and personal if I tried from #sundancenextfest the other day.’
Perhaps because of her stature of being the daughter of a cultural heavy-weight or simply the daughter of someone in the public eye, or the offspring of someone famous who gets a shoe in to star in dad’s movie, one individual took exception, commenting: ‘You’re ugly as shxt’
Adding: ‘And that steaming horse sh– of a movie, Yoga Hosers, should be banned. F— your talentless c–t of a father for trying to compare it with The Matrix. You’re cancer and I sincerely hope you end up like Lindsay Lohan and dead.’
That response brought forth delicious responses from both father and daughter who could’ve chosen to simply ignore the troll (as I normally do…).
Wrote Smith on facebook: ‘Way to unload on a teen girl because YOU have nothing to do in life.’
Adding: ‘But even though I should be apoplectic about it, my kid thought it was funny. “I’d be mad if I had a tiny dick and anonymous voice too,” she said, bemused by the bitterness.
‘But here’s a nickel’s worth of free advice for folks like this Troll: if you hate me (or my kid) this much, the better use of your time is to make YOUR dreams come true, instead of slamming others for doing the same.
‘The best revenge is living insanely well – so if you wanna get back at a 17 year old girl for the grievous crime of enjoying her life, the best way to do it is to succeed in your OWN existence. Show the world WHY we should be paying attention to you instead of anyone else.’
Smith then closed out his response by writing: ‘Attacking teen girls on the Internet is the saddest form of masturbation that exists and requires no discernible skill or talent.
‘You want attention? Don’t make yourself mad, make something original and fun. Because if you’re not being useful in this world you’re being useless. Don’t be useless: go make stuff that makes people happy!’
The film-maker’s comments underscored the frustration of being on the web which so often leaves anyone (famous or not) open for any unfettered remarks or at worse unrelenting bullying.
While most of us have learned to discard such comments, the unleashing of particularly vitriolic statements against young women, hints at the misogynistic tendencies rampant within society and the harm such comments so often cause.
Weighed in Harley Quinn Smith on Instagram: ‘At first I was like alright that hurts, but then I realized who the actual f*** cares??? Why should I let this sad a** troll who clearly either has a stick so far up his a** it’s affecting his moral compass or is compensating for an insanely small dick ruin my day??’
‘So I decided to laugh it off because no matter what, there are always going to be people in your life that are either jealous of you, don’t like you or perhaps are just looking to be negative, but you can’t let them get to you because if you let them upset you then they’re winning.’
Added Kevin Smith’s daughter: ‘So do what you love and spread positivity because life is too short to waste it either being a troll or paying attention to them!!!! Don’t ever let some stranger on the Internet try to bring down your self confidence because you are wonderful just the way you are!! Kill em with kindness kids.’
The fiasco comes on the eve of Harley Quinn Smith starring alongside Johnny Depp‘s daughter Lily-Rose Depp in her dad’s latest comedy, ‘Yoga Hosers.’
According to thewrap, the duo play a pair of teenage convenient store clerks who team up with a legendary man-hunter to battle with an army of bratwurst Nazis that are threatening the girls’ party plans.
Why do people allow themselves to become victims? All you have to do is turn the computer off. Don’t engage with that mentality. That’s what the trolls want- attention! Twitter and the rest of them give these bullies a platform to say what they want without repercussions. It’s a sad part of being online.
Wrong to bully the girl, but he put his 17 year old in a movie? Better parenting to let her hone her skills and get jobs because of her hard work. Thats where you earn respect.
