Craig Brooks Holiday Inn black worker becomes viral hero after refusing to give racist white woman a room after racial slur during phone reservation.
A black Holiday Inn Express worker in Texas has become a viral hero after uploading video of him refusing to give a woman a room after she called him the n-word while trying to make a reservation.
Craig Brooks, 26, known as @craignofridayy on Twitter, captured the moment a woman who called him a “f***ing n****r” appeared to regret her words and tried to get a room at the Austin hotel he was working at, Sunday night.
Speaking to businessinsider, Brooks explained how the woman on the other end of the line had called saying she needed a room. She sounded aggravated, Brooks recalled, adding that guests typically just make their reservation through an automated system — rather than speaking directly to hotel staff. After taking her credit card information, the woman told Brooks she would be at the hotel within ten minutes.
‘OK cool, see you then,’ he said in response, without hanging up the phone. But, she didn’t know he was still on the line. At that moment, Brooks heard the woman say: ‘yeah, that f*ckin n*gger.’

Craig Brooks Holiday Inn black worker stands his ground and becomes viral hero:
Unbeknown to the racist woman, the ensuing remark and subsequent conversation was being recorded.
Explained Brooks to the racist woman after telling her that he wasn’t able to go through with the reservation upon her arrival shortly after, ‘I understand that but you called me a f***ing n****r’
A woman off-camera can be heard saying ‘my mother died’ as she attempts to get a room in the same hotel the rest of her family were staying in.
Calmly, Craig continues: ‘I understand that but you called me f***ing n****r.’
‘I’m sorry,’ the woman eventually says.
Craig. ‘No. You weren’t sorry when you said it on the phone.’
The woman: ‘Listen… I need a room.’
The hotel worker goes on to say that ‘in the climate that we’re living in today’s society…it’s above me now’.
The woman isn’t giving up, and once more tells him that she needs a room, and Craig responds that there is a ‘Best Western next door’..
‘Oh please,’ the woman pleads. ‘My daughter is here…
Craig reminds her that she called him a racial slur on the phone, and she responds by getting tearful and saying she’s had ‘a horrible day’.
‘And I had a horrible time when hearing that,’ Craig interjects.

At this point the mother appears to address her daughter, telling her that the hotel worker is refusing to let her in and when the daughter asks why, Craig again repeats that the woman called him a racial slur. After a pause, the daughter ploughs ahead: ‘Sir, my grandma died.’
‘I understand that, but it’s above me now,’ Craig repeated.
In an update, Craig said that the woman’s “whole family” was staying at his hotel and had ‘an attitude’, but he finished work at 11pm.
At the end of the day, Brooks says he was just doing his job. He described his response to the woman as a “classy clapback” to racism.
‘Being that I’m black in today’s society, we have to know how to deal with racism and combative white people, so we have to look at alternative ways to handle situations instead of being aggressive, because they already see us that way,’ Brooks explained via Insider. ‘I look at it like it’s above me: you’re mad and I’m too good for that. That’s how I’m seeing it and how a lot of people are taking it.’
The video was shared tens of thousands of times since it was uploaded, and both #Itsaboveme and #Bestwestern began trending in the US.
