Lake Charles Charter Academy Louisiana teacher, Deidre Smith charged with rape after allegedly having sexual relations with a ten year old male student.
A third-grade teacher at a public charter school in Louisiana has been accused of carrying on a months-long sexual relationship with her 10-year-old male student.
Deidre R. Smith, 34, of Sulphur, was on Tuesday taken into custody on charges of first-degree rape and felony indecent behavior with a juvenile.
Smith’s arrest came just hours after the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from smith’s place of work, Lake Charles Charter Academy, concerning her alleged misconduct involving one of her students.
During the investigation, detectives learned that Smith, who is married and the mother of three young children – a girl and two boys – having maintained inappropriate relations with her student since the end of 2018, including having had sexual intercourse with the child.
Not immediately clear was how the indiscretions came to be revealed.
Judge Ulysses Gene Thibodeaux, president of Lake Charles Charter Academy, said in a statement to KPLC that the incident involving Smith was ‘isolated’ and occurred ‘off-campus.’
Smith was released from the county jail after posting $50,000 bond KPLCTV reported.
According to her LinkedIn page, Smith has been an employee of Charter Schools USA, the Lake Charles Charter Academy’s parent company, since 2012.
Lake Charles Charter Academy is a free public charter school for children in grades K-8.
Facebook posts reveal Smith’s husband working for a gas station chain, with the couple having been married just on 12 years.
Not immediately clear is what led to the female educator abusing her position of trust, authority and power and subjugating her male underage victim.
The case is still under investigation and more charges are likely, according to police.
