Kandice Mason pole dancer: Hoke County middle school teacher suspended after video of her dancing is leaked to school.
A North Carolina teacher has been suspended after a video surfaced of her working a part-time job as a pole dance instructor.
Kandice Mason told ABC 11 that she posted a video of her dancing to her private Facebook page, which she said was somehow leaked to the Hoke County Public Schools.
‘I’ve worked so hard to try and make sure I can provide for my daughters and our livelihood to have it jeopardized just for doing something that I’m passionate about,’ said Mason.
The video led to the school suspending Mason on account of her violating a policy in which employees are to act as role models and ‘are responsible for their public conduct … even when they are not performing their job duties as employees of the school system.’
The school district provided a statement to the station saying Mason was ‘suspended with pay pending an investigation,’ but did not disclose any further details.
Mason, a single mom of two also has a passion for learning and holds three degrees; a masters in Psychology, bachelors in English, and a certificate in phlebotomy.
The part time dancing instructor said she uses pole dancing as a way to stay in shape and as a form of self-expression.
Mason mentioned being a self-taught pole dancer and using the ‘craft’ as a way of unwinding at home after long days in the classroom.
‘I’ve never felt ashamed of pole dancing. It’s just an art for me. I just don’t see it as negative,’ Mason said.
Which is to wonder, although Mason may not feel ashamed of her body and physical pursuits- why does the school district and are we to believe in a hyper sexuality of half parading clothed celebrities and other starlets being worthy but not that of a school teacher’s? Never mind the implied notion that a woman’s body can still offend?
Or is it the suggestion of sexual edge and verve that overwhelms educators – or is it simply the perception that teachers are expected to conform to preferred expectations and stereotypes- irrespective of their academic qualifications and school skill sets?
Reiterated Mason, ‘I’ve worked so hard to try and make sure I can provide for my daughters and our livelihood to have it jeopardized just for doing something that I’m passionate about’.
A final decision is expected to be made by the Hoke County School Board, the station reported.
A petition on Change.org is urging the school district to let Kandice Mason teach. It has more than 1020 signatures.
And then there was this July, Facebook post where Mason who goes by the name– Arisa Layce Mason also made the below post too- see what you think?
‘Once again, I am not a robot. I do not fit into the compartmentalized piece of sh*t box that you want to place me in. I do not follow YOUR strict, conservative, prehistoric, ancient rhetoric that demonizes my sexuality and polices my body, making me unable to govern my own d*mn ADULT self and have to adhere to and within the context and moral obligations of your own personal code of ethics.’
