Christine Lee Funk sentenced: A former Mendota Heights, Minnesota music school teacher is spared the potential for 15 years jail after striking a plea deal which sees her only serving 6 months jail.
A former Mendota Heights, Minnesota school teacher has been sentenced to (only) six months prison after sexually assaulting a 17 year old male student.
The sentencing follows 32 year old woman, Christine Lee Funk having previously faced a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison for three counts of criminal sexual contact with her 17-year-old victim during February, 2017. Instead the former choir teacher Funk pleaded guilty to one count with the two others against her dismissed.
The female teacher’s sentencing follows the former music teacher at Henry Sibley High School being accused of having sex on three occasions with her student victim. Police learned of the relationship after being alerted to inappropriate text messages on the boy’s phone that included semi-nude photos of Funk.
Reported kare11.com: ‘Funk was interviewed and admitted texting with the boy but denied having sex, saying the messages were just a fantasy. When confronted with the pictures police had recovered, the defendant reportedly admitted to sending the images.
During his initial interview, the teen also denied having sex with his teacher.’
Police then did a deeper audit of the student’s phone and found additional messages suggesting the two had sex. It was during further interviews that Funk’s victim admitted to having sexual liaisons with the teacher, once at the high school, and once in a car outside his parent’s house.
Christine Lee Funk sentenced: Abuse of position of trust, authority and power.
As part of her sentencing, a Dakota County District Court judge on Monday also ordered Funk, a married mother of two to serve 10 years of probation.
The sentencing has since raised questions as to whether the same plea deal and sentencing would have ensued had the genders been reversed.
Yet to be necessarily understood is what led to the female teacher sexually preying on her male teen victim, abusing her position of authority, trust and power and betraying teacher student bond.
