Tennille Whitaker resigns: Nevada Wells Elementary school teacher charged with having sex with two students leaves her office as investigators continue to seek more possible victims.
Tennille Whitaker a married Nevada high school teacher has resigned amid accusations of sexual misconduct with two male teen students.
A report via the Elko Daily Free Press told of the Wells Elementary School teacher submitting a letter of resignation on Aug. 16. The publication reported that it was approved along with three other items included in a consent agenda.
The 40 year old woman’s resignation comes after being charged with eight counts of sexual conduct with a pupil following an eight month police probe.
According to a press release from the Elko County Sheriff’s Office, the two alleged victims were 16 and 18 at the time.
That said, the Elko County authorities expressed the belief that there might be more victims.
‘At this point we have two students that have been involved,’ Elko County Undersheriff Ron Supp told during a press conference. ‘But we think there are possibly more.’
That said Supp did acknowledge reticence from the community to step forward despite overtures of confidentiality.
But it gets better, police also suspect Whitaker engaging in sexual activity with school employees and volunteers.
Whitaker’s resignation comes after the school teacher was arrested June 5. Following her arrest, Superintendent Jeff Zander said the married mother of two had been placed on administrative leave.
She was receiving payment for her work at that time.
Matters first came to the fore in October 2016 when a parent alleged that Whitaker had been observed spending time with a student privately. Come February, students and school staffers were interviewed. Students said they didn’t notice anything ‘out of the ordinary.’
‘Nobody was really willing to testify or give a statement that said ‘yes, this happened,’’ Superintendent Zander said at the time.
Supp said the investigation is ongoing and wanted to encourage anyone with more information to reach out.
Prior to her resignation, Whitaker had worked 11 years for Elko County School District.
Whitaker is set to appear in court on Sept. 11.
