Muhammad al-Maghrabi a Yemeni child rapist is publicly executed in that nation’s first execution under Sharia law since 2009.
Muhammad al-Maghrabi a 41 year old Yemeni man convicted of raping and murdering a three-year-old girl was executed in the capital of Sanaa on Monday in front of hundreds of onlookers, reported government press.
A policeman fired five bullets from an assault rifle into the pedophile as he lay with his hands handcuffed behind his back on a blanket on the ground in Tahrir Square, after a judge read out the death sentence.
The execution drew a large number of onlookers given the grimness of the crime and the subsequent outcry. Local media named the victim as three year old girl, Rana al-Matari.
Under Sharia law, people convicted of murder can be punished by death. Although Sharia law doesn’t specify how the death sentence should be carried out, public executions in Yemen are considered legal. According to the U.S. State Department, Sharia law is “the source of all legislation” in Yemen.
Leading into Maghrab’s execution, security was ramped up amid fears of a possible revenge attack on the child rapist by armed tribesmen related to his victim. The police truck transporting Maghrabi to the square was escorted by five police patrol vehicles.
At the moment of execution a police officer holds an AK47-style weapon against his back and opens fire. In total five bullets are spent.

Reuters reported television cameras broadcast the sentencing across the country. It had been Yemen’s first execution since 2009.
Upon the execution of Maghrab, the child’s father, Yahya al-Matari said that he felt as if he had been reborn.
Told the man, ‘This is the first day in my life,’
Adding, ‘I am relieved now.’
In the interim, Yemen remains devastated by more than two years of civil war between its Saudi-backed government and Houthi fighters who seized parts of the country in 2014 and 2015.
Yet to be understood is if more public executions are to follow in the near term….
