Rafael Diaz Queens music teacher arrested sexually abusing 12 year old student. What led to a Catholic school teacher abusing his position of authority?

Rafael Diaz a 69 year old Queens music teacher was on Saturday arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a then 12 year old girl.

Upon the teacher’s arrest, the man charged with sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

According to the nydailynews, Diaz was the music director for the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, where his victim was a student.

Sources said the girl’s family made arrangements for her to receive private lessons at home, where the alleged abuse occurred.

Notes the nypost: ‘The girl, now 15, told investigators Diaz would touch her diaphragm with four fingers and then fondle her breast with his hands over her clothes while making her sing different pitches.’

One instance involved the Catholic school teacher asking the victim if she had started her menstrual cycle and then allegedly putting his hand on her private parts over her clothing.

About two weeks after the last incident, the girl told her mother she wanted to get out of the choir and quit music lessons without explanation.

The girl saw her abuser about two weeks later on a train platform, where Rafael Diaz apologized to her and asked her to come back to the choir. She was upset when she got home after school and told her father everything. He went to the school and complained. Officials there called cops.

Diaz was charged with sexual conduct against a child less than 13, sexual abuse in the first degree and acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17.

Not necessarily understood is what led to the teacher believing they could behave in such a way towards the student and abuse their position of authority and power over the child.
