Alexandria Vera pleads guilty to a lesser charge which could see her serving no jail time and just probation after having sex with a 14 year old boy.
The woman who had taught English at Houston’s Stovall Middle School, was initially charged with ‘continuous sexual abuse of a child’ — allegedly having near-daily sex with the boy and having an abortion when she became pregnant, investigators said. With her plea deal of ‘aggravated sexual assault of a child’ the woman potentially faces no jail time come sentencing.
Vera initially faced 25 years to life in prison if convicted on the more severe felony — but the conditions of her guilty plea mean she only faces up to five years behind bars, and could be released on probation.
According to court documents, Vera met her 13 year old victim last summer when the boy was a student in her 8th grade English class during summer school.
A sexual relationship reportedly developed.
The bust led to the teacher claiming that she and the teen are in love, and that she’d been introduced to the child’s family as his girlfriend. According to court documents, the boy’s parents are accepting of the relationship, including Vera in family gatherings.
Come January, Alexandria Vera became pregnant with the boy’s baby in January, with the child’s family allegedly said to be ‘very excited’ and supportive about the baby. But after an unexpected visit to the school by Child Protective Services in February, when Vera and the boy were questioned about their relationship, the teacher became nervous and terminated the pregnancy.
During investigations, neighbors said they saw the victim at Vera’s house all the time along with there being regular sleepovers. They say Vera, who has a 4-year-old daughter, claimed the boy was her brother.
According to khou.com neighbors said the woman sometimes had as many as five teenage boys over at any one time.
‘She was having a lot of kids in her home,’ one neighbor said. ‘There was drinking in the front. We always found beer bottles and beer cans on her side of the lawn and half of the (teens) did not look older than high school, maybe.’
Following her June arrest, Vera was accused of violating her curfew and jogging on the track at her former school.
Yet to be necessarily understood is if the former couple have remained in touch or intend to resume ‘interactions’ once Vera finishes out serving her sentence?
Vera is expected to be back in court for sentencing in January.
