What led to Teresa Vanover prostituting her mentally disabled teen daughters? Mother pleads guilty to 24 counts of child abuse.
Appearing at Rockingham County Courthouse, the 52 year old mother told how she sold her daughters for as little as $5, $10 or $20 in exchange for physical services to pay for her husband’s medical bills along with her unrelenting crack cocaine habit.
Charged with 24 counts of child abuse by prostitution and 24 counts of promoting prostitution with a disability, Teresa Ann Vanover was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison.
A report via the Greensboro News & Record told of the mother conceding taking her 15 year old daughter to a neighborhood barber shop, a nearby boat ramp and even one of the men’s mother’s house.
She would then allow the men to perform sexual acts on her daughter, or would make her daughter watch while she had sex with them.
When the 15-year-old began to refuse, Teresa Ann Vanover used her 13-year-old daughter instead.
It wasn’t until months after her father died that the elder teen relented and approached police.
Told the teen in court affidavit papers: ‘We don’t have to do it anymore because daddy is dead.’
Arrested September, 2015, Teresa Vanover confessed.
‘Drugs did this to me and I’m sorry,’ Vanover wrote in a letter read aloud by her attorney in court according to a report via fox8.
Adding:‘I’ve made some terrible decisions I’m not proud of…I am truly wholeheartedly sorry for what I’ve done to our family. I broke up a lot of families up and it hurts knowing that I did that.’
She also led police to four men who would be charged in the prostitution ring: Thomas ‘Tommy’ Woodall, Everett Ferris Jr, Donnie Carter, and Mickey Snow.
Police identified Woodall, 67, who owned the barber shop, now permanently closed, that the mother took her daughters to.
Appearing in court, the man pleaded guilty to statutory rape or sex offense with someone over six years old and abetting prostitution. He is serving a minimum 16 year sentence.
Ferris Jr, 67, pleaded guilty in March to six counts of patronizing a prostitute and indecent liberties with a child. He was sentenced to a minimum of six-and-a-half years in prison and 36 months on probation.
Carter, 65, pleaded guilty to two counts of forcible sex offense, two counts of indecent liberties with a child and one count of patronizing a prostitute with severe mental disability.
He was sentenced on Tuesday to a minimum of five years in and three months in prison and 36 months of probation.
Snow, 75, will go on trial in July. He has not entered a plea.
Wilkes County Superior Court Judge Mike Duncan according to a report via the dailymail, called the case one of the ‘most disturbing’ he had ever seen during the sentencing.
Teresa Vanover saw her daughters for the last time after she confessed to police.
Told the mother upon seeing her daughters: ‘It’s mommy’s fault,’
‘I have to face the consequences.’
Reiterated Teresa Vanover’s sister, Angela Mills: ‘Teresa has a good heart. She just got herself mixed up in a bad situation. Everybody’s suffering. From the kids to the family members all the way around. We’re all feeling it.’
Not necessarily understood is what illness the children’s father had died of and how or why the father wasn’t able to get the necessary medicine needed necessitating the mother prostituting their children…?
