Why did a Brownsville gang rape victim make her story up? Who was she protecting and at whose hands was she really being abused?
An alleged Brooklyn gang rape victim has conceded having had consensual sex with her alleged attackers, along with her father. Assertions that five Brooklyn teens had strenuously argued at the time of their arrest at Osborn Playground in Brownsville last month.
Acquitted of all charges are Denzel Murray, 14, Shaquell Cooper and Ethan Phillip, both 15, and Onandi Brown and Travis Beckford, both 17.
Addressing the abrupt turn about face, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson told in a statement Wednesday afternoon: ‘Working closely with the NYPD, my office has thoroughly investigated disturbing and very serious allegations of a gang rape at gunpoint last month inside the Osborn Playground in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn,’
‘The complainant, as well as her father, provided multiple inconsistent accounts to NYPD Detectives and to experienced Special Victims prosecutors about important material facts in this case.’
Adding: ‘The complainant has recanted her allegations of forcible sexual assault and the existence of a gun, and she does not wish to pursue criminal charges against any of the defendants.
‘She also refuses to cooperate with any prosecution against her father, who was engaging in sexual conduct with her. That night, this young woman’s father and the five young men engaged in conduct that was reprehensible and wrong, but because of the lack of reliable evidence, criminal charges simply cannot be sustained.’
The turn around comes after authorities initially charged the five teen accused ages 14, 15, 15, 17 and 17 – as adults, each with one count of rape, two counts of criminal sex act, and one count of sex abuse in connection with the alleged assault.
The girl involved claimed that she was with her 39-year-old father in the park drinking at about 9pm on January 7 when the group of teens approached them.
She told investigators that the group accosted them in the park and ordered the father to leave.
The teen also told that of one of the accused pulling a handgun at the father, demanding he leave.
Police Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said at the time that the young woman gave a very credible report.
‘She had physical injuries at the time,’ he said. ‘She was traumatized.’
Yet there were signs things were amiss when it came to the father’s story, who had wondered about after being allegedly told to leave and then going to two different bodegas near the playground where workers noted the man appearing inebriated and slurred in his speech and not expressing any fearful or imminent danger.
Eventually the father asked one of the merchants to use a phone with the father going back out on the street after being declined where he flagged two cops.

At the time the father told of his fears that his daughter was been murdered, with police records citing the father having told that a ‘gun was pointed at him.’
Asked why he hadn’t sought to defend his daughter instead of leaving the park to the mercy of the teen youths, the father told he feared being shot.
Told the father during investigations: ‘The one put a gun in my face telling me to run, and all of them had their way with her.’
The girl also offered her side of the story, saying she was scared when her father took off running, leaving the men to take turns raping her.
The officers found her alone in the playground with bruises and cuts along with strewn pieces of her clothing near the park.
The young woman claimed to have bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, but was not prescribed any medicines. She also had multiple healed scars on her arms..
Following the teens’ arrests in January, two of the boys insisted that they had consensual sex with the 18-year-old.
They also claimed to have witnessed the young woman having sex with her father in the park before the man staggered away from the scene, leaving his daughter alone with the teens.
‘Can we have some of that?’ one of the boys allegedly asked the father.
In turn the father vehemently denied claims of incest made against him.
‘They’re just trying to get out of the thing they did,’ the unnamed father told the New York Post.
Adding, ‘I want them to rot in jail.’
Of question is if the girl had been previously abused at the hands of the father and why she consented to sexual acts with the man? Actions that the father was adamant in denying.
Of note, Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney Lisa Nugent said in January that none of the four suspects was identified by witnesses who viewed lineups and photo arrays.
Investigators said they did an extensive search for witnesses but came up empty. They said they recovered video from a nearby middle school that showed distant figures entering the park, helping to bolster the woman’s account.
How the teens came to be the ongoing focus of police and the unrelenting target of media outlets sure in the teen’s alleged guilt is not necessarily understood.
And then there were these comments on the web that caught my eye, see what you think?
Are we being told that consensual sex with 4 teenagers and daddy in a playground at night is normal in some
This is clearly a very damaged girl with a long history of abuse.
And how many of you sat there and condemned those boys as soon as you saw them? They said she was having sex with her father from the very beginning. I doubt most of you who commented nasty things about these teens are ever going to learn the lesson of not judging a book by its cover though…
How was it consensual if she had all those injuries? Sounds like a girl so traumatized and accustomed to abuse that she doesn’t know the difference.
