Elizabeth Scroggs, a 32 year old Coahulla Creek High School, Georgia high school teacher has been arrested after it was uncovered that the woman was having a sexual relationship with an 18 year old student.
Since her arrest the language arts teacher and assistant cheerleading coach has been charged with a felony count of sexual assault by persons with supervisory or disciplinary authority.
WRCBTV reports that the inappropriate relationship allegedly took place in December 2014.
Whitfield County Sheriff‘s reps said the encounters did not take place on school property.
According to the Dalton Daily Citizen, Scroggs was arrested at the school Wednesday night.
The teacher’s arrest would come after authorities were tipped off by an anonymous call.
Pursuant to an investigation, authorities disclosed that the student was a willing participant.
Since her arrest, Elizabeth Scroggs is being held without bond at the Whitefield County Jail.
She began her career with the school system in 2006 at New Hope Middle School.
Ironically Elizabeth Scroggs had been recognized as one of the top teachers in the area, and her arrest has since come as a surprise to many.
In 2010, she was recognized and awarded the Best of the Best Teacher for Chattanooga, Northwest Georgia and surrounding areas at the Chattanooga Official People’s Choice Awards. Scroggs was also three-time STAR teacher nominee between 2012-2014. The Kiwanis Club of Dalton honors local teachers (and students) as part of the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program.
Since Scroggs arrest the local board of education it has been told must now determine what steps to take next.
At present it is not understood what inspired the teacher to abuse her authority and initiate a sexual relationship with the student or whether in fact her position as an authority figure and power over the student was the catalyst?
