Instagram has gone on to delete the account of a mother of two, save daughter of the sun after she appeared in a naked yoga repose whilst breastfeeding her daughter.
The decision to remove Amy Woodruff, Daugher of the Sun‘s account, has gone on now to cause dissent among users who have now gone on to create a petition seeking to have her account reinstated.
Wrote one commentator: ‘This beautiful, pure living inspirational mama has had her account removed by Instagram,’
‘A bunch of sad witch hunters have flagged her photos after Amy unwillingly gained their attention with a naked breastfeeding photo that unfortunately went viral after she posted it on her personal blog.
‘This photo was not even on instagram. . . [Instagram’s] actions are incredibly disappointing and a global community is outraged! Bring her account back,’
The photo initially came to be placed on Amy’s personal blog after her husband went on to snap a picture of their daughter impromptuly rushing to feed on her mother’s breast whilst she was partaking in a yoga pose. It wasn’t soon long before the image went on to capture people’s imagination and going viral.
Whilst many went on to praise Amy’s photo many went on to express their contempt.
Told one commentator: ‘She is disgraceful and needs to cover up,’ wrote one HuffingtonPost commentator. ‘She has no self respect.‘
Yet others have come to defend save daughter of the sun’s account.
Wrote one user, Ashley Abott: ‘Instagram has deleted her account probably due to malicious flagging,’
‘Spread the word! This family oozes love and just brings so much inspiration.’
Told another commentator: ‘Breastfeeding is natural – get over it!,’
And if you can breastfeed in that position you deserve a medal not to be banned! This is a blow to breastfeeding mums everywhere!
‘I do not find this type of nudity offensive. A mother feeding and nurturing her child is never inappropriate,’
Instagram has since gone on to counter that although images of breastfeeding mothers is allowed, pictures of naked children are not.
Told a spokesperson: ‘Instagram has a clear set of community guidelines which make it clear what is and isn’t allowed,’
‘While we cannot comment on individual accounts, we followed our usual protocol on this occasion and took action on content that broke our community guidelines.
‘We encourage people who come across content that makes them uncomfortable to report it to us using the built-in reporting tools next to every photo or video on Instagram.’
Nevertheless Amy Woodruff, an avid practioneer of yoga has no regrets placing the image on instagram. Having now gone on to tell the following:
‘The yoga community and earth mamas loved it!’
‘Women who didn’t seem to enjoy breastfeeding or more of the conservative crowd thought it was the weirdest thing and just couldn’t wrap their heads around it,’ she explained of the women who called the image ‘shocking’ and ‘crazy’.
‘I enjoyed hearing all sides of the spectrum as it reminded me that we are all different and if anything it may have opened the eyes and hearts for some who didn’t think multitasking to that level was possible!’
Judging from the photo itself one ought to wonder what the fuss is really all about, if not for nudity (one barely sees anything) or rather society’s reluctance to accept that women’s breasts go beyond sexualized notions and for many women breasts are simply about nurturing. Something it seems many have a hard time wrapping their mind around…
