A 17 year old Bolivian boy has been buried alive after an angry mob took to throwing the boy into the open grave of his purported 35 year old victim, Leandra Arias Janco.
The boy, Santos Ramos tell prosecutors was seized by a mob as large as 200 who took to blocking surrounding roads to stop police from arriving before ditching him into an open grave before placing the woman’s coffin over him and proceeding to fill it with earth.
It is unclear how residents got hold of 17-year-old Santos Ramos, but a local reporter told the Associated Press he was tied up, beaten, before being tossed into the open grave.
Colquechaca, where the incident is said to have taken place is a town of about 5,000 inhabitants some 207 miles ( 333 km) south-east of the Bolivian capital, La Paz.
Correspondents say lynchings sometimes happen in isolated, poorer parts of Bolivia, where police and other authorities are scarce.
But as The Economist points out, “Community justice can sometime resemble legalised lynching, featuring stoning, strangulation or burning with petrol. The police do not keep separate records of these acts.”
And then there was this comment on the web that made me wonder as well:
When “justice” is dispatched by the mob mentality this is what happens, guilty or innocent he should have faced trial/investigation and a reasonable punishment. Burying him alive is just barbaric and disgusting, previously in the same area they lynched one man and burnt another alive for robbery . None of this is justice it`s just cruel vengeance driven murder. I believe in punishing criminals , but when you resort to this behaviour then you are no better.
