Minguell Kennedy Lembrick remains at large after shooting at two Americus, Georgia police officers at a Country Club Estates. One cop dead, one critically.

Minguell Kennedy Lembrick has been identified as the suspect behind the fatal shooting death of one Americus, Georgia police officer and the critical injuring of another.

The shooting incident comes after Lembrick, 32 fired off a volley of shots at Country Club Estates apartments early Wednesday morning.

Killed was Officer Nicholas Smarr of the Americus Police Department with the severely wounded officer being identified as Georgia Southwestern State University Officer Jody Smith.

According to a Facebook post, the Albany Police Department told of one officer from the Americus Police department being shot and the other with the campus police department at Georgia Southwestern State University.

Told Chief Mark Scott of the Americus Police Department via the Albany Herald: ‘We have two officers that have been shot this morning,’

‘One was from the Americus Police Department and one was from the Georgia Southwestern State University Police Department. It happened at Country Club Estates apartments about half an hour ago.’

The shooting led to students at nearby Georgia Southwestern State University being told to shelter in place while a hunt for the shooter was ongoing.

‘Students, faculty and staff should remain in their present location until further notice,’ an alert on the school’s website said. ‘Please secure all doors and windows (any additional actions such as shut down HVAC, turn off lights, move to unobservable part of the room, get on the floor, away from doors) and await further instructions or contact by first responders.’

Stephen Snyder, a public relations official with Georgia Southwestern, said that the call of the shooting went out at about 10 a.m. Wednesday. He said that one of their campus police officers went to help with the shooting when he heard the call because of its close proximity to the school.

It wouldn’t be until 12.45pm that Chief Deputy Eric Bryant with the Sumter Co. Sheriff’s Office issued a statement saying one officer was dead and the other in ‘very, very critical condition.’
