Mayor Richard Silverthorne arrested: How a Virginia Fairfax County mayor came to live a double life as his world began to implode around him.

Richard ‘Scott’ Silverthorne the mayor of the city of Fairfax in Virginia has been charged with drug charges after allegedly dealing in meth in exchange for sex with men through a dating website.

News of the 50 year old mayor’s exploits came after Mayor Silverthorne was arrested Thursday after having arranged a meeting with a man at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in exchange for a group sex encounter.

That individual unbeknownst to Virginia Mayor Richard Silverthorne was an undercover agent who’d been assigned after police suspected the existence of a local meth dealer in Fairfax County, soliciting online.

Upon his arrest, Silverthorne who also works as a substitute teacher for the Fairfax County Public Schools, was charged with felony distribution of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Told Captain Jack Hardin, Commander of the Organized Crime and Narcotics Division during a Friday press conference: ‘He was compliant. He provided a full confession on everything he did that night.’

Also arrested and charged were Mayor Richard Silverthorne’s alleged suppliers, Juan Jose Fernandez, 34, and Caustin Lee McLaughlin, 21, at the hotel.

The sting began after police received information that Mayor Silverthorne was on a dating website used to arrange casual sexual encounters between men, and that he was providing meth in exchange for sex.

An undercover detective created a profile on the website based on information about ‘what type of person the mayor was looking for and types of activities,’ police said.

Within two days, the mayor initiated contact with the undercover detective, saying he could provide meth for sexual encounters. The undercover detective agreed to meet with Silverthorne at a hotel for a ‘group sexual encounter’ in exchange for the drugs. Richard Silverthorne allegedly said he would bring the meth along with other men for the encounter.

Silverthorne was arrested after he met with his alleged suppliers outside the hotel and then provided the meth to the undercover detectives.

Of note, police allege Silverthorne having engaged in at least two similar prior exchanges in the past. While declining to identify the indemnifying dating website, cops said that drugs-for-sex was the ‘culture of this type of website.’

Silverthorne, whose father was also the mayor of Fairfax in the late 70s and early 80s, was reelected for a third term in May, after struggling with financial and health problems, according to a Washington Post report.

Yet harboring of what had already been a tough year for the Mayor was news of Richard Silverthorne being laid from his job with the National Association of Manufacturers.

Things only deteriorated with Mayor Silverthorn filing for federal bankruptcy protection after owing nearly $60,000 to creditors. Forced to move to a townhouse with a friend, after being foreclosed in his five-bedroom home, Silverthorn was then diagnosed with a nonlethal form of cancer.

Told Mayor Richard Silverthorne in January: ‘It’s been a terrible year for me,’

‘There’s no question about it. I can try to sugarcoat it as best I can, but the facts speak for themselves.’

After his reelection, he said, ‘I’m bouncing back. “The city of Fairfax made me the comeback mayor.’

According to the Fairfax government websiteMayor Richard Silverthorne championed ‘quality of life issues’ and worked to promote ‘a healthy lifestyle.’
