Jessica Carlton, a 44 year old Grand Rapids, Michigan woman has been arrested after having sent an unnamed 11 year old boy lurid text messages along with suggestive images of herself over the span of two years.
The long distance tryst originated after the 44 year old woman met the New Jersey based boy on Xbox Live, a gaming platform that allows gamers to communicate and would end after the boy’s mother discovered Carlton’s debit card in her son’s wallet.
In shocking testimony, prosecutors told how Carlton wrote two journals dedicated to the boy, including one detailing intimate fantasies and in another in which she wrote a daily ‘I love you’ in his honor.
Since her arrest, Carlton has been charged with child endangerment and was extradited to New Jersey where she remains held on $175 000 pending an indictment.
According to court documents, the victim first started talking with Carlton over Xbox Live in May 2013, after first using the device to communicate with the woman’s son.
Even though Carlton knew the boy was just 11 at the time, their relationship quickly crossed the line to inappropriate.
Just a few months after they started talking online, the two started exchanging sexual text messages and nude pictures, while also engaging in nude video chats on Xbox kinect.
But it gets better.
As time progressed, the woman is said to have also read to the boy from her diaries, detailing her fantasies of having oral sex and intercourse with the victim.
Carlton also sent the boy gifts of clothes, jewelry and candy – which she mailed to the home of one of the victim’s friends so his family wouldn’t know.
Their relationship apparently continued even after the boy started dating a girl in middle school.
Carlton drove from Michigan to New Jersey in December 2014 when the boy was starring in a school play, and allegedly met with the boy and his girlfriend in the parking lot to shower him with gifts of posters, clothing and candy.
The two met up twice more on that trip, before Carlton returned to Michigan, and on one occasion she gifted the victim a debit card which she told him he could use to buy whatever he wanted.
It was when that things unravelled when the victim’s mother discovered the debit card in her son’s wallet a few months later, with the mother calling police to report Carlton’s disturbing behavior.
The mother told police that she had known about the inappropriate relationship, when she found out Carlton was posing as a 13-year-old girl online.
She said she thought she had scared Carlton off when she previously called the woman on the phone and told her to stop communicating with her son online.
The woman’s eventual arrest would come after recording a video conversation between the Carlton and the boy in which the sexual predator confirmed many of the allegations.
Carlton was arrested in Michigan on April 9 and extradited to New Jersey where the case is pending an indictment.
The woman faces two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and 12 counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of the child.
