Did Marina Krim’s nanny Yoselyn Ortega have a motive?

A Manhattan mother, Marina Krim returned home last night to find to her horror her two year old son Leo and six year old daughter Lulu stabbed to death in the bathtub by their nanny who had also slit her own throat in an apparent bid at suicide.

Wondering why the nanny, 50 year old Yoselyn Ortega had failed to meet her with the two children for swimming lessons Mrs Krim returned to her $10 000 a month West  75th st apartment with her other daughter, three year old Nessie who was with her at the time to find her two other deceased children lying in pools of blood in the bathtub.

Said one neighbor Rima Starr: ‘There were bloodcurdling screams from a woman,’  There was some kind of screaming about, “You slit her throat!” ‘It was horrible.’

Upon returning to her West 75th residence and asking the doorman if he had seen the children Marina Krim proceeded to the family apartment only to find it entirely dark. Searching through each room for the whereabouts of her children it was only when she came to the bathroom, turned on the lights that she came across the grisly sight of her two stab riddled children lying unconscious in the bathtub. Nearby hunkered was Yoselyn Ortega with her throat and wrists slit in an apparent bid to take her own life.

Coming across the still breathing bodies of her two children, Marina Krim proceeded to scream at the top of her lungs for help whilst applying pressure to the nanny’s throat to temper the flow of blood pouring from her.

Nevertheless despite being rushed to the hospital Marina Krim’s two children died whilst Yoselyn Ortega this Friday morning has been reported to remain in a critical but stable condition. Marina Krim and Nessie for their part were also taken to hospital were Mrs Krim was sedated after witnessing the horrific scene.

Marina Krim and Leo and Lulu.

Marina Krim, a former pediatrician and stay at home mother said to teach weekly art lessons to children and married to the children’s father, Kevin Krim a senior vice president and general manager at CNBC Digital, was met later that evening by her husband Mr Krim at the hospital after police collected him at the airport after returning from a business trip.

What is not understood at present is why Ms Ortega went on her stabbing rampage something that has taken the Krim family by complete surprise given how close the Krims were with Ms Ortega’s own family who the Krim family had even once spent 9 days with in the Dominican Republic where Ms Ortega originally heralds from.

Reflected Ms Ortega’s niece, Katherine Garcia: ‘She was acting kind of nervous lately.’

That said Katherine Garcia insisted Ms Ortega loved the children. As an aside Ms Ortega has no criminal history.

Police are currently further investigating the incident but one can only hazard what drove Yoselyn Ortega to commit such horrid act, was she on some medication, had there been a sense of slight between her and her employer, the Krim family recently, or was it her reacting to something that the children did that suddenly caused Ms Ortega to snap? Or was it just something unrelated to the Krims and Yoselyn Ortega reacting to grief or stress in her own personal life?

Of course one also hazards to wonder how the socio economic aspects of the Krim’s social standing may have also tempered the family nanny who one assumes was probably paid quite well but that too may have played a part in a sense of resentment against the well to do Krims. Then again why should a family’s social standing ever be a factor when an employee decides to do the unthinkable and murder a family’s most cherished beings, its children…?

Reflected some reader on the web: This is about a sick person who took the lives of two Innocent children. It has nothing to do with class warfare or working parents who want to make a good living to buy there family the American Dream. It¿s a horrible tragedy that is every parents nightmare. And my prayers are with them.

This one hit way too close to home. Right now my kids are being looked after at home by a nanny and my stomach turns just thinking about the immeasurable pain the family is going through. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Krims.

I am a mother of two, last night I cried, and cried some more. There truly are no words for this, this is completely devastating in the worst way possible. Kevin, Marina, Nessie, I am so sad and sorry that this has happened

this is awful, but could the nanny have been set up? i mean going on a limb here and wondering if someone was angry at the family, went in, did the business, and then offed the nanny and planted the item, is that thought pattern too far fatched?

i guess it seems unlikely to me that a nanny who had a steady job, (i would imagine the family paid well given the apartment, and job title listed, not all execs are total dicks, i would know my father was one) would just go bananas like this. doesn’t pass the logic test in my opinion

terrible nonetheless

I am so sickened about last nights tragedy. I live in NYC also, this hits too close to home. As I drove my daughter up town to school this morning, I was crying for the parents, crying for the pain these two children endured.
My heart is just broken.
I am sick for this family.
My love and deepest condolences to them

Perhaps to gain a sense of the love Marina Krim had toward her children and ultimately the tragedy befallen on the Krim family the following entry in a blog Marina Krim kept might highlight the inexplicable feelings any parent would at present be undergoing as a result of last night’s acts:

“Life with the Little Krim Kids,” which has since been suspended. Her last entry, written mid-afternoon yesterday reads: “Leo speaks in the most adorable way possible. Firstly, he speaks super clearly, so you can understand every word is he is saying. And he does things like, “(I) want a fresh bagel” and “Dito (what he calls himself) wants cold milk” and most adorable of all, “No thank you” — he never uses “No” alone, it’s always paired with “thank you”.

  1. When the children were being murdered, and Lulu fought for her life, why were there no screams or disturbance heard?

  2. The fact that two young children had to die in this way is horrible. However, if they had parents instead of “friends,” they might still be alive. Seems like the Krims wanted to be everyone’s “friend.” They befriended the nanny, and she murdered their children. Even when the two children were lying in blood in the bath tub, Marina did not go their aid, but to the nanny’s. The nanny lives, and the children die. Shortly after, a foundation is set up to raise money (for the underprivileged?), and a social function attended by the parents. I cannot criticiize or judge the parents because I really do not understand them. Maybe, it’s a class thing, because I am not affluent by any stretch of the imagination.

  3. Actually scott, I think Tirana might be onto something. Leo’s middle name is Hidalgo. This is a “title” in spain. I wondered as well if Mrs Krim was Hispanic or part Hispanic. mrs Ortega is middle class DR and has a degree in accountancy. I think she did feel the equal of Mrs Krim and that is why she was resentful. Their lives should be parallel. Yet Mrs Krim offered Mrs Ortega extra money to clean.
Having read the blog I do get the impression that Ms Krim expected people to do what she wanted. Her nose was out of joint when the teacher said no to her art project because it didn’t reflect the curriculum.

  4. Even after finding this horrendous scene, Marina Krim applied pressure to Ortega’s neck wound to stop the bleeding.

She saved the life of the woman who had just murdered her kids. THAT is a human being.

  5. Re read other factual stories and then perhaps you’ll understand. Seems that you’re confused because you can’t comprehend English to the fullest. You are another person with nonsensical rhetoric with erroneous misleading statements.

  6. ^Many people can have names reflective of other cultures, doesn’t mean they are not caucasian. It’s nonsensical at best to even discuss what colour she was, it doesn’t matter. People did call 911 not sure where you read that it never happened. It seems to me that you’re misinformed on numerous levels. The mother isn’t a pediatrician either. Amazed at how many start discussing this family and their colour, socioeconomic background, religion and so on.

  7. I nannied for a professional sports player in my youth. Taking care of other people’s kids is tough, you really don’t love them like their parents do even though you are with them sometimes more than the parents. I was a good nanny, but toddlers are difficult. I saw such misconduct and negligence from other nannies as soon as the parents left. Nothing criminal, just sometimes mean spirited or feed up and overwhelmed nannies would take it out on the kids. As a mom, I would never trust anyone to help me raise my kids, no way. I saw way too much!

  8. There very well may have been no more motive than frustration and exhaustion. Marina’s blog states that the nanny’s family nick named one of the children “fast and furious”. Kids are often very very challenging. The nanny was older and worked hard. I can’t help but think she likely just snapped. That which keeps a parent from doing the unthinkable – overwhelming love and adoration of your own children – is not there for a nanny. With luck, most overwhelmed nannies will take a break or just leave for different work. But keep in mind that a person does not need to have any history of mental illness, does not need to be on drugs or medications, and does not need to show any sign of distress to suddenly snap and do something out of character.

  9. I don’t know this story is very strange. Over all I feel bad for those poor baby being in such horrible situation that should never happened. However, the only thing that bottle me about this story is the statement of ” her throat and wrist were cut” is that even possible to remain concious after inflecting such pain to cut other part of your body. and why would someone else scream “You slit her throat.” like if blaming someone else. This is a terrible story, which also make me more wonder who should we trust around our kids. Bless those kids, my heart goes out to the family.

  10. if there were screams which I’m sure they were why didn’t any of the tenants call the police? seems like the police was called only after the mother found her 2 kids and the nanny, story seems very fishy

and George Orwell, If the mother did put her hands on the nanny’s throat maybe it was because the mother possibly thought that an intruder broke in and did the murders, why would she think the nanny did it? Did the nanny confess or did the police found out that the nanny did it?

Sad story that is such a mystery, I will say this though, I think the mother is not white, I think she’s a latina mix herself, her name is Marina which is a latin person’s name. I’ve been around many latinos who could pass for white and maybe the nanny was jealous that she married a big time executive and the mother was a pediatrician herself. The kids look kinda mixed too they do not like fully white so maybe the nanny was jealous of this latina’s mother’s good life and took it out on her children. I don’t know just a theory.

  11. if you read several reports you will see that many of them are based on hearsay and nothing more. I’ve read a handful of stories and no two are alike. Meaning that it’s failed journalism once again and I can assure you the mother did not kill her kids. The children were dead upon arriving into the building in which they lived. Screams could be heard, the kids are dea!, the kids are Dea! to which I can only guess you never know what is factual and what isn’t. At the end of the day, this family is greiving and no one knows why the nanny did the unthinkable.

  12. Very suspicious. Why would she put her hands to the nannys throat to stop the blood if her children were still breathing. Sounds like the mother did it. Why would the nanny?
