Is Germany’s Forest Boy having authorities on or is there something more than meets the eye going on?

To date, Germany’s ‘Forest Boy,’ Ray, as he is known has shown little inclination to find out who he really is or where he comes from, at times showing great apathy when any real attempt to do so is made. In fact it is said he had to be prodded to allow this actual photo of himself above to be taken and disseminated by authorities who are now desperate to come to a conclusion to the case as he continues to live in their care and at their expense.

The case  which first appeared just over 9 months ago is no closer to being solved, this after extensive forensics, DNA testing with international missing persons lists, public appeals, and extensive fingerprint tests around the world. It seems for now the ‘Forest boy’ will remain just that, part of the forest.

The case first came to a head in September of 2011 after a teenage boy emerged from a forest nearby Berlin, saying that he had lived there with his father until one day his father passed away and after burying him decided to seek the outside world.

gawker: Also known as “Ray,” the young man — who claims he was born in June of ’94 — told authorities he and his father Ryan started living in the woods after his mother, Doreen, died in a car accident. He left the forest following his father’s death, heeding his instructions to “walk north until you find civilization.”

Though he initially communicated in English, police say it is not Ray’s mother tongue. They also noted several inconsistencies in his story: “He was relatively clean and the tent he had with him did not look like it had been used for five years,” Neuendorf said. “It was also simply unimaginable that someone could live near Berlin for such a long time without being seen.”

Investigators have been unable to confirm any details about a fatal car accident that matches up with the teenager’s story, nor have they been able to find the body of the father — raising “serious doubts” about the story.

cbsnews: He is now being taken care of by youth services, and is going to school. When he first appeared, Ray spoke English and a few words of German, but has picked up more German fast, Neuendorf said.

He has also quickly adapted to city life and technology, using a laptop and his cell phone with no problems.

“Everything gives the impression that he was not far away from civilization for years,” Police spokesman Thomas Neuendorf said.

Investigators have also noted that the boy has a complete set of teeth and no obvious dental work, and his hands, fingernails and teeth appear “well kept.” Something that does not consistently with someone who has lived hand to mouth for 5 years in a forest.

The teenager is said to be aged between 16-20 years old, 5 ft’11 does not speak English with a particular accent. He has dark blonde hair and blue eyes, and three small scars on his forehead, three small scars on his chin and a small scar on his right arm.

Could the forest boy be playing the ultimate prank on authorities or is it a situation that he is subversively playing a prank on himself? Or is there something more sinister at play that the boy would like us all not to find out? That said various theories have surfaced:

dailymail.co.ukOne is that Ray is telling the truth, or at least what he believes to be the truth. It is possible that his limited memory is due to a traumatic event that he suffered that has either blocked out memories or led him to construct an alternative reality.

Another theory is that Ray’s story is a case of deliberate deception. He may simply be an illegal immigrant who comes from outside the EU and who wants residency in Germany. If he had conveniently ‘forgotten’ who he was, or where he came from, he could not, of course, be forced to leave.

Ray has been in a young persons’ hostel at a cost to taxpayers of £5,000 a month. His forthcoming 18th birthday — if it is indeed that — complicates matters further.

‘He cannot stay there for ever,’ says Neuendorf. ‘At some time, he will have to be given a family name, a nationality and an official date of birth — that is the law in this country.’

At present authorities are now hoping that the release of photos of the teenage boy may lead to some leads.

Boy speaking only English and with no identity walks out of German forest claiming he had spent 5 years there.
