Here’s pause for thought. What constitutes a man? Apart from the obvious, the ever delving definition of what constitutes manliness has been ever since the coming of the enlightenment period and the rise of the industrial age a challenging question.
Of course that answer only gets trickier these days with the onslaught of trends, and the rise of the ‘metrosexualization,’ of most males. Where it once used to be taboo to even want (let alone admit) using moisturizers, facial creams and even waxing one’s back and chest, such grooming techniques for most men (well ones in their twenties anyway and some of us in our 40’s) have become staple.
All pause for thought as ‘Mansome,’ the new hilarious documentary (judging from the video clips below) as directed by SuperSize Me’s Morgan Spurlock and from executive producers, Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Ben Silverman attempt to come clean (sorry pun intended) in what actually constitutes manliness. One clue of course is that us men are more than ever spending more time staring at the mirror- which perhaps suggests that we are once again (well since the Ancient Greeks once made it popular) relishing in our beauty and reckoning that manliness isn’t so much about an attitude but also perhaps an overt display of that attitude. How of course could be what makes one man more manly than the other. Then again fellas, let’s be honest, perhaps the idea of being a man is to command the ardor and respect of other men but more importantly the attention and the breeding jewels of the opposite sex with where masculinity finds its whole self entwined in femininity.
Either way prepare to spend some time getting a pedicure and a deep scrub with seaweed as us men get to the bottom of such questions…who knows you may want to grow a handlebar moustache after watching this documentary or very quickly shave it off.
