Ann Yee: Fall 2011

Her lips were the bright spot in a mostly dark-clad room. The overall color scheme was bruise-like. Purple, navy, grey and the occasional brown or army green. This, in direct contrast with the brightly clad audience. The weirdest of the weird in the fashion crowd came out for this show, and it was a delight to see. Luxurious hair and fur capelet over aqua gloves and impeccable wide leg trousers made one particularly dapper gentleman. One girl wearing plaid, leopard print and polka dots gasped in pleasure at the hosiery on the models. In keeping with the bruise theme, they were purple and blue splotchy, veiny creations.

But, other than the questionable tights and makeup, the collection was a solid one. And, like Lee, the collection was dark, but with a hint of merriment here and there. An abstract hat here, a floral adornment there. The somber tone was in keeping with one of the major trends of the season, as was the ruched abstract floral pieces, although that felt a little overdone. The standout pieces were the structured and flawlessly tailored skirts and blazers. Lee’s real strong point is wardrobe basics with a twist: a pencil skirt with a unique waistband and hemline.

One brown suit in particular looked like it could have come out of a WWII era movie…set in space. Sheer blouses cut triangle shaped silhouettes that highlighted tiny arms. I predict that Lee’s clothes will mostly be found on the trendiest of the trendsetters, but some of the pieces definitely have a mass appeal. Even if one skirt did, like, totally go straight up one of the model’s ass, as overheard from my bemused corner.
