The wayward journey of the New York birther.

as long as some people are making money, the recession doesn’t mean anything. But there is a darker undercurrent to birther talk. Just as campaign talk about Obama, “not being experienced enough” sounded like it was saying, “he’s black,” so is it not hard to hear a fixation with death in their obsession with the details of his birth. “We don’t have sufficient details about his birth,” they seem to say. “This troubles us. Similarly we don’t have sufficient details about his death. But while there may not be anything else we can do to allay our troubles about his birth, there is something we can do to allay our troubles about his death.”

As the talk petered out under the influence of, well, being under the influence, it was left to another day to fully chart out the peculiar ambits and wayward journeys of the New York birther. My guess is that, in long-standing New York tradition, they will not be reconciled but, knowing what it means as so many similarly inclined likely do not, they will learn to live with it, with “live” being the operative verb. And it is salutary, for obvious reasons, why this is good that this must be the way of the New York pariah. And though it won’t do to make a direct parallel, perhaps the season and the predominance of Christianity among the birthers will serve to make a point that “learning to live with it” is itself also part of a long-standing Christian tradition. For though we know a great deal about the details of the death of Christ, in comparison, we know next to nothing about the details of his birth.

That might be the most breathtaking view of all….
