Dianne Kruger, one of Mr Lagerfeld’s closest friends, and one suspects one of Mr Lagerfeld covet missions to mentor into grandness had this to say as she came to the lantern to present Mr Lagerfeld an award for his lifetime achievement- “I remember when one day we went to a gallery in Paris to look at some work and him looking at the work absorbing it, then him telling me not just all about the artist, but the whole story of the subject’s life, it’s when I suddenly realized the depth and acumen to this wonderful man.”
And then this was heartfelt story relayed by Liz Peek which had the whole room in giddy delight, as relayed from close friend of Mr Lagerfeld – Valentino:
“Do you remember, Karl, when the two of us were in our teens, sitting at the Cafe de Flore, or at Fiarce…dreaming of that one day we could become big names?
Do you remember when, 10 years later, the two of us were sitting at the Harry’s Cafe in Rome, discussing our first experiences starting out, and becoming big names?
And do you remember when, in 2007, at the ARA Pacis, again in Rome, when you made me promise you that I would never retire? And do you remember when, last week, we sat together in St Tropez on my boat, and went back to all of these memories, and many, many more?
You don’t like to think about the past. I don’t do it either…but I we have to remember the past sometimes to discover that so many years have created a friendship very rare in the fashion business…”
