Candela: A vestige of a surreal Trading Post…

The crowd at the installation was, of course, young, chic, shiny and the epitome of glamour. McQueen shoes and Chloe bags mingled with the Pimm’s cups being offered on vintage trays. But this fashionable crowd was somehow overshadowed by the simple, dusty allure of the designs.

Looking at Gabriela’s father, it’s easy to see where she got her inspiration for said simple, dusty designs. He spoke not a lick of English, and wore on his belt the design with which they brand the cows on his centuries old ranch. In his leather vest and well-cut pants he seemed equally at home in the NYC fashion installation as he surely is on the fields of his estate. Beaming with pride over his beautiful daughter, he complemented the scene perfectly.

The music further created an ambiance of no-frlils rural style meets urban chic. Johnny Cash, Credence Clearwater Revival, and The Rolling Stones before they were junkies streamed from the speakers. When Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros came on, I realized that anyone of those band members would fit in perfectly with the crowd.

The designers themselves were modest, a little shy and very articulate. As I watched them take in the scene, they seemed proud and even a little surprised at the overwhelmingly positive reaction. I can think of no one more deserving.
