Marianne Aulie. Tabloid star or artistic genius?

SHARE

SCV: If you think about someone like Jeffrey Deitch or Damien Hirst, notable and controversial art figures in the art world – how important has it become that artists today attain similar repertoire?
MA: In the lack of interesting and great artists, we see strange birds fly low.
SCV: You  challenged cultural institutions in Norway, appeared consistently in the tabloids yourself and as a consequence have been able to navigate presence in the art world. In the end I am curious what is it that a collector is buying- the identity of the artist behind the work or the value of the work irrespective of the persona of the artist?

MA: A collector is buying his own dreams. A chance to be part of something greater than his own time. Only time will tell the genius of a
collector.

SCV: Do you think if you became a NY socialite or a popular tabloid fixture that would further legitimize your work? Do you think to some degree making a scene in Norway has extended your mythical status as an artist?
MA: Doing in New York what I’ve been doing in Norway will disrupt my quiet lunches at Sant Ambroeus on the corner of West 4th and Perry St. My
art will remain the same. My presence in the Norwegian media has become a life of its own and is far from me and my work. It’s a monster that colors my wings red. That said, your questions give me belief that there is hope for strong communications between the media and artists.

SCV: What are the ideas behind your work?

MA: To show my mother that I’m worthy of the love she never gave me. I would give up my art for one moment with her making pancakes and me
sitting on her lap, knowing that she always loved me.

SCV: What are some of your current projects?

  1. Fantastic article, when you have something more than the art to relate to, in this case Aulie’s family dilemma, it transforms it to an incredibly compelling story. I am looking forward to hearing more on her and will be checking out her gallery in the west village.
