The A list crowd turns up to ‘Your History is not our history.’

David Salle.

RP: Much of the work itself was given to us on loan courtesy of the artists themselves. You may not know this but many artists tend to hold onto their favorite pieces and I guess that’s how we managed to make this happen. Of course one also has to give thanks to various institutions and entities that were generous to also forward us some of the work we see around us.

SCV:Between you and David, how did you come up with some of the particular pieces on display tonight?

RP: It was a mutually exclusive progress that we both felt that paralleled sensibilities that we were seeking to question.

SCV: Is this work still relevant, or rather what makes it relevant?

RP: Yes, indeed very relative. It was the prototype of work that questioned the times, culture, institution, authority and the way the public was perceiving itself and how the self was perceiving culture. One can still feel the significance, and apply the themes to current themes. It’s what I think what makes this work memorable and at the same time unsettling.

SCV: What is the role of the artist? It seems artists are set on becoming their own celebrities as opposed to questioning the run away celebrity culture we currently have in place.
