Toni Francesce’s “Artificial Life” or Death?

The metaphor of human as machine progressed as knitted sweater blazers appeared on the runway; contrasted with heavy polyester fibers, as did the low-neck lined loose-fitting silk tuxedos—to produce a lovely impression of engineered movement. The untimely result of human robots and machines is the theme of alienation—certainly present in the second half of the show. Structured blazers and dresses that seemed to be upheld by wiry skeletons—almost seemed to defy gravity.

The most interesting enactment of xenomorphic militancy came toward the end—plastic transparent black vests the color of a dead black—star-studded sky. The designs got stranger and more alienating by the end. Toni Francesce seemed to be suggesting that too much technology and alienation—was our twisted way of self- defining.
