Laura Smalls is here to stay. Her models pranced out her new Lux line forged from Silver and Gold, framed with Red Ribbons on Black Lace and draped with silk and chiffon. This was a star caliber event which needed no trimmings. The event; as if produced on the grounds of Casa Casuarina, presented her showy line of casual elegance to a large appreciative crowd who had been ladled the soup of anticipation since her last September’s success at NYC’s bistro Benoit, was this night, on full display neath the storied fame of the Plaza Hotel.
This was not a single toned theme strutted out to her standing room only audience, rather a line chosen from off-setting textures; on one hand, marched before Whoopi Goldberg and Andre Leon Talley’s fashion minions, was a Pewter glossed gun-metal-grey asymmetrical dress, high ribboned and cut in shape giving the soft easy texture of a gown and the readiness for an encounter without an affronting push. The latter was matted against a splashy red floral patterned silk modern of similar cut and a black Kimono style dress. In all, Ms. Small’s many designs that evening were about play between the progressive female armament and modish female strengths done with taste and simplicity.
