Photography by Ricardo Garcia. At the Suffolk club.

So I live in one of the trendiest areas of town at the moment, Lower East Side (LES) surrounded by everything from bimbos, business men, bums, artsy college kids, fashion forward (and backward) people, gangsters, hipsters and gipsters (gangster/hipster combination).

Although residing here for a while I still lose my way searching for hidden non “glitzy” or non “bling bling” establishments that one might find in the Meatpacking district and around town.  I managed to find my way to The Suffolk and chatted it up with owner Andrew Figueroa about his space for upcoming New York fashion week, mainly booking for after parties or shows.  While photographing the place, I noticed there were three parties happening at once. Already in a space that is “unusual” and pieced together, I basically began to realize that nothing made sense about any of it, the parties happening there, the place and the people.  The only answer was to have a few beers and see what was going to happen next.

Jacki

I walked into the main bar room and found an after work gathering of hipsters.  Commanding the bar was an angelic blonde named Jacki.  The front room had a rollerblading party hosted by an industry internet “blog” with gipsters and thumping music. Apparently I met one of the “celebrities” of the rollerblading world.  I don’t recall her name but I know she had nice tights on, great hair and a pretty smile.  Does that sound chauvinistic?  I certainly hope so.

Finally, in one of the side rooms I found a “Ping Pong” tournament happening with about 200 spectators who were obnoxiously concentrated on each game.  One of the players hit the ball so hard it bounced across the room and off Susan Sarandon’s shoulder (who apparently is an avid supporter of the sport and in attendance that afternoon) as she was watching the LES CUP “Table Tennis Championship”.
