As for Nadav’s view on menswear, “I think about it every morning when I wake up,” he said. “You don’t want something flashy. You have to see a man’s well-dressed 20 minutes after talking to him.”

Well, he succeeded; his vintage tie with a motif leaning on Japanese was noticeable in less than 5 minutes. Pulling it out, he looked at the label and said, “It’s made in Ohio.”

A few rounds around the circuit the bar and I came upon John Fiore. Rake-thin and sharp in stovepipes and a swirly blue Ted Baker shirt, he proceeded to amuse present company with his linguistic skills. He could only be…yes, an artist! The most plainly dressed man at the party, who goes by the name of Nick, is indeed a filmmaker-slash-percussionist.

Nick didn’t stand out too much like a sore thumb. A sweep around the room showed a majority of dressed-down men sipping their Spaten beers. There was, of course, the occasional snappy Men In Black get-up but typical outfits consisted of various compositions involving a snazzy shirt, a form-fitting sweater and a bold tie.

The ladies; however, were more creative. Pre-law student Robin Fernandez was dressed like a classy cadeau. “Yes, I’m a gift,” she said of her organic cotton dress with the silk bow beaming from her chest. Red plumes sprouting from her raven ensemble was the piece de resistance. “When you get dressed, it defines your character and your identity. It’s about knowing who you are and knowing how to wear clothing. You make the clothing look good,”

Not to be overshadowed by Robin’s classic LBD, Rayeshia Russell strutted her petite compact self around the bar with maximum impact in her powder pink minidress complete with gold speckles, towering suede fushia pumps, a hand-sized pendant from Canal St – “it’s a statement piece” – and pearls, pearls, pearls. “Clothing is your expression,” said Rayeshia. “In order to make a statement, words shouldn’t be uttered.”

This well-dressed themed soiree appears to be a success for the demure of the sexes, at least; most of whom were carrying on a coquettish banter with the larger bevy of men present.

Poull attributed this relaxed and convivial air to the timing – “This isn’t for people who want to party until 4 am. This is for people who want to party at 11 pm. It’s a different crowd; friendly, nice, and (most importantly) well-dressed.”

But as the witching hour drew near, this party showed no signs of slowing down, especially with a best-dressed prize yet to be won.
