The Allure of The Greasy Spoon: Who’s To Blame for Obesity?

Despite our thinking that these fast food businesses are not smarter than we are, and with people dedicating their lives to unveiling the unhealthy and inhumane ways of these chains, they always appear to be one step ahead of us. With the failing economy, all fast food chains are having fun competing with each other in a game of who can go stoop the prices down the lowest. With only 99 cents that can’t even buy you a pack of gum, you can get a full-fledged meal and more at your local McDonalds — who can resist that absurdity? Additionally, with the mania surrounding weight-loss so prevalent, these chains have developed new healthy and low-calorie menu options to stay on top of the game. Although they are obviously still not superior to food that we cook ourselves or eat at restaurants, it appears as though they just want to be included in the restaurant industry war. Even though they aren’t the most feared opponents and are the most critically condemned, they know that they can rely on their handy-dandy operation in order to be victorious. The operation being: making profit from our inescapability of being lazy, which in turns makes us want reliable comfort food, which in turn makes us need food that is accessible 24 hours a day, which in turn makes us addicted to fast food.

Fast food institutions will always be the target of bad press and the butt of all the blame for obesity nationally and internationally. They, however, will always exist as long as humans roam the earth (well, the obvious reason being that humans have to make the food). These fast food corporations might be using propaganda, thinking more of their own revenue than their customers’ health, and taking advantage of human disposition, but it’s not like we aren’t aware of it. Sadly, our desires and cravings always seems to win over rationality — (people will shove ethical codes out the window if it means they can get what they want). Even after such documentaries like “Supersize Me,” that caused an uproar and protests for their demise, we still are stuffing our faces with a Big Mac and providing them with great revenue. With so many new establishments dedicated to providing only organic, healthy, and mouth-watering foods, why are people still choosing fast food? Sure, the poor economy is also partially to blame, but haven’t fast food companies still exist in eras with a better economy? The truth of the matter is, we can point the finger at everyone but us, but we’re the ones who are responsible for the occurrence of obesity, and the preventer of its’ disappearance.

As long as we keep microwaving our meals, turning to liposuction to lose weight, using electric toothbrushes, using calculators in math class, owning a Roomba to clean our carpets, and using elevators and escalators, we will always succumb to the allure of the greasy spoon.
