Twitter or Narcissism?

narcissistic-twitter2Then we had the case of actor/celebrity Ashton Kutcher challenging CNN on who could have the most followers – who could reach the one million milestone first. Was it really any surprise that Ashton won? After all CNN is in the business of reporting news whilst people like Ashton are in the business of creating myths and voyeuristic hyper realities. Which one would you rather have? Yet by reaching this milestone a sudden cutting in the integrity of twitter was achieved. Twitter was no longer about being a means of communication, it was really more about how popularity you were. Suddenly we were all back in high school…

Just like with Facebook and MySpace, Twitter has become another portal into another dimension where unpopular or insecure people could suddenly become all the rage by the number of random people they add onto their profile. With television becoming the only increase in the source of reality, how far along until the division is blurred? Tweeting at every minor event that occurs in your day detracts from you actually living your life. Tweeting how you’re having dinner with such and such socialite takes away from the fact that you are physically there eating dinner. What are these people secretly wishing? Would they have us believe that they have now become a celebrity in their own right? When did anyone knowing that you just did your laundry entitle one to demi God status?

What of those of us who already are egotistical enough to believe that they are celebrities and are they continuously tweeting like a maniac to try to increase their 15 minutes of fame into a 30 minutes? Next thing you know, brides will be tweeting how happy they are while walking down the aisle.

Although that all boils down to the fact that I am ranting, it sadly is becoming something more serious than just loving Twitter or detesting it. A recent psychological delusion aptly named the Truman Syndrome has hit the medical field. With patients believing that they are in their own reality shows and that everyone and everything around them is artificial, this is an extremely serious disease. Although it might sound amusing, patients who suffer from this syndrome typically lash out in atypical ways in order to release them from their own reality show – which in actuality is their real lives. Including but not limited to dangerous acts, they also bawl out on friends and strangers alike to get them to admit that they inhabit a simulated world. The causes, stated by doctors simply as “the increase in reality television programming and the general pop culture trend.”

Does that ring a bell? It might sound ludicrous and menial when regarding such an online messenger service, but as the Chaos Theory states, “It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterfly’s wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world.” From where I am sitting there seems to be a lot of fluttering…

Advanced technology producing phones that come out with applications such as Facebook and Twitter only seem to be adding fuel to the fire(that way you will have the option of being a demi star at every point of the day…) In our generation where talking on the phone is old school and children have to be pried away from their computer or phone screens, are we headed into a new generation where human interaction will be non-existent? Will we be like those futuristic movies where we are all confined within a limited space with only our computers as a means of communication? Will Twitter become the general populations’ voice? A civilization where the internet and technology have become the leaders in a mindless society, can something as small as Twitter cause a world of devastation? Who is to know, because ultimately you only have time to care about yourself, as long as you can convince other people at the same time that they should be caring about you too.

As for me? I just finished writing this article and am going to go nurse a Sapphire tonic – shit, does that count as a tweet? I guess as long as I want you to know right?

  1. All these site can be utilized in a positive productive way as well but I do agree with this article, and our cultures sickness with celebrity-ism….I have a theory about times like these though, and that is that talent really has to make a comback, fame is going to have to be earned in a more respectable manner (I hope!!!) I’m not sure people are going to want to worship dumb crotch flashing celebutantes when the rest of the world is working 10 times harder to just pay the necessary bills.
