Isn’t it time you preyed you could become rich too?

become-rich-tooWhen giving money away to gospel houses makes you more poorer but holier.

We found this in the New York Times and are in kind of shock that people haven’t woken up to this amazing scam. It kind of makes us want to run out there, hold a bible and pretend we’ll make you rich as long as you give (money) along the way. Of course the church has it’s own kind of weird set of rules which we are about to explore together.

Welcome to the amazing ‘Kenneth and Gloria Copeland’ scandal show playing in reach of your nearest southern church and where loud wailing and gospel preaching can be heard. Ideal believer preferred, broken disillusioned, economically marginable types who still believe giving to others while in greater need themselves will somehow make them better off and at the very least Ken and Gloria very well off…

The mantra- never mind your misery and the economic woes, as long as you still believe in myths and Jesus as well donate generously (to Ken and Gloria of course) all will be redeemed a hundred fold. We wonder has Bernie Madoff being coaching the Copeland’s?

With Private airplanes and boats. A motorcycle sent by an anonymous supporter. Vacations in Hawaii and cruises in Alaska. Designer handbags. A ring of emeralds and diamonds. Well wrong can you go- it seems the Copeland’s are on a sure thing? Of course they only ask you help yourself get there too- by giving more generously to the Copelands.

Really, does anyone smell a rat here? Yet what baffles is why people still persist in such ventures and obvious hoodwinking? What is it in the national character that places so much faith in such diabolical charades? Is it Sunday morning boredom? Pious anxiety, puritanical manners, the belief that remaining poor and taken for a fool a sign of virtuousness after all or is it really what we suspect- even though you give money away at least you’re getting one hell of a show that you’re very unlikely to get on pay per view.

When religion turns scripture on its head and forces you to wonder…

Of course we love Gloria’s line that “God knows where the money is, and he knows how to get the money to you.” Indeed if only Gloria were talking about the whole congregation.

Amen.
