Anchors, like the rest of the world, may have the capacity to cook, but it appeared as though television journalists were being singled-out. If it weren’t the display of causal sportsmanship from the participants, it’s the people who came to bear witness, including Top Chef Leah Cohen and chef Mina Newman. A score of accolades was granted to Arthur Chi’en as he was announced winner; apparently, this was no PB&J anchor special.
SVC: What exactly did you cook?
AC: We were given a very strict diet; it was thirty minutes, one protein, three vegetables, and two fruits. So, we made a three-course meal, which was mandatory, which was avocados stuffed with roasted corn and peppers, then we made some lamb that was rubbed down with poisson sauce, powdered coriander, and offset with orzo, and the third thing was a mango custard dessert. It was very Greek influenced, but in that I’m Asian, so I tried to mix in the respective cultures into the dish and it worked out well.
SVC: Wow! How did you end up an anchor as opposed to a chef?
AC: Well, I host a food show on channel 11 now and I also do news there, and I’ve always been interested in food, so now I get to use that interest and cultivate it.
SVC: Fantastic! How did this end up in affiliation with the magazine?
AC: The magazine asked the co contestants and myself to take part in the competition for the charity, and we did.
SVC: So, you would consider yourself a proponent of the charity?
AC: Oh, absolutely—absolutely. I think anything we can do for others, is essential.
One is certainly obliged to respect such wonderful intentions. They say such intentions often lead to less than agreeable circumstances and places, but that can only be expected from the death-be-decadent-indulgence described by Mr. Chi’en. One can never say that high society doesn’t give. As dry ginger champagne, sleek new designs, and delicious food were shared, likewise was the necessary philanthropy.
